Just wanted to mark the passage from this life of Terry Pratchett today. Although I came to his Disc World series late, I have come to consider Pratchett one of the best fantasy novelists (period) and a very sharp satirist. If you look closely at Midmark — including its politics and police force — there’s a little bit of Ankh-Morpork, Sam Vimes, and especially the wonderful book Night Watch in its DNA.

I don’t think I have ever read any Pratchett.
I did see the movie “The Color of Magic” a few years, and planned to read some of his stuff. I just haven’t got there yet.
Although Night Watch is the best novel of the series (and one of the best fantasy novels of the last century), I hesitate to recommend it as a starting point. The story would be just as sharp on its own, but it probably helps deepen one’s appreciation of the characters if you’ve read some of the other Vimes/Watch books first (Guards! Guards!, Thud!, The Fifth Elephant, and Jingo are all very good in that series; Going Postal and Making Money are another good mini-series; really, you can’t go wrong just reading all of them).
