Surname Inventory Larry & Ann Hamilton Files 23 November 2007 (Updated 09 December 2007)

I now have all of the genealogy research notes and correspondence of my parents. Mom died in 2005 and
Dad has not been able to get around to check the files for years. I can ask him a question and he knows
it is in the files, but could not get to them.

It filled three file cabinets in their home. It takes ten file boxes in my home. Below is a Surname
Index of what is in each box. I have labelled each box G-1 through G-10, G is for genealogy.

Each box has each surname alphabetically. Dad prepared a censuse folder for each state for
many surnames. Those that they did not read, just have a copy of the page of census records
available from "A Researcher's Guide to Census Availability", Mom was the author.

Each line with a surname is as printed on the tab for the folder. Those with multiple
surnames tie into my direct line, such as Robertson.

I am slowly working my way through each surname, in the order that I am most interested, to
develop a detailed inventory for that surname. As I make each surname's index, I will indicate it with
the date next to the surname. This initial index is just handwritten in a legal pad, but with white
higher-quality paper. Once I get my main lines of interest in this initial format, I will type it up
and give each index its own page linked to from each surname below. This will both help me be better
organized and let other interested researchers know what I have.

It will be a long time before I get to every surname. Two surnames in particular will be the most
challenging, since they involve so much material. The Craven surname takes two and a half file boxes.
It can take four or five hours to index an "average" surname, especially a two inch thick folder of
correspondence. The other surname is Robertson and allied families. There are files in more than one
box, and it could take at least one box of its own. Several Robertson's have contacted me about what
I have, but it could take twelve or more hours just to make an index of what is in each folder, just
to know roughly what I have. Keep checking back here to see my progress.

Surnames that some think are related in this list are not. Olmstead is English and Umstead
is German. Some Olmsteads mistakenly think they are Umsteads and some Umstaatds morphed
their name into Olmstead, causing even more confusion. In my case, both surnames are
entirely separate families.

The surnames I am most interested to index from the files are, in alphabetical order:
Barnes, Burns, Cardwell, Davis, Gibson, Hill, Holsclaw, Keane, Lindsay, Olmstead, Robertson,
Roe, and Shanks.

As I index the files, I find information that is not in my genealogy program, so even more
time is required to update it. My Dad started entering information in a genealogy program
back when ten megabytes was huge, and expensive. He soon filled it. He has not done much
more with it. I have been working to add to the GEDCOM he gave me over thirteen years ago. I
have made some discoveries and enlarged the tree, and have added lots on my wife's family.

I am hopeful, that with continued enthusiasm for this project, I will make headway and have
better insight into this collection and be of more assistance to fellow researchers. If you
want an update of when I have indexed a surname, send me an email and which surnames you are
interested.

I am glad to share information, but please be patient. I work full time, and have over 20
years to retirement, when I'll have plenty of "free" time.
