I Lost It!

I did a bone-head thing Friday, May 21 and managed to delete all of my email which I had not backed up since Christmas! I was actually in the process of getting ready to back it up. I found some tools that could have helped, but it was not flagged as deleted as it should have been, so it was gone. I found one tool that could have recovered it, but I was too cheap to pay $99.95 and spent many hours trying demo versions. Since Outlook Express does a "non-standard" delete when you lose the pointer to your message store and point it at the correct place (ugh! do not ever do this!).... I should have paid the money then, but now it is in the realm of thousands of dollars, ah well, the story of my life.

I have sworn off Outlook Express (again!) and gone to Pegasus. I plan to go to a mail client that writes the same format email file for Windows and Linux. I'll have to write up this horror and point people to the useful tools I found and should have used.

Oh well, I always seem to hose my email when I do something to my PC about every two years. Last time it was adding Linux for a dual boot system and I did not back up! This time I added a second hard drive to make backups easier! HA! Am I talented or what?! WHAT! I never get in a hurry with a client's data, but because I think I know my system.... Famous last words.... AGAIN! Pretty bad for a person with a BA in History to not learn from the past! I'm trying to laugh so I don't kick myself too bad, so please laugh too! I must finally be getting mature (It's the big 4-0 in a few months, too bad my hair won't be with me to share the celebration.), I hate to make mistakes and this kind of mistake I could have easily kept to myself and beaten myself up over it for the next several years....

I must apologize to all the kind people who have sent me email with information and updates on my direct family and on lines that tie into mine. Please re-send me a copy of our correspondence if you see this. Thankfully, almost everything I have received I entered into my GEDCOM file right away. I have not yet posted all the updates I have made since Christmas, but plan to do so over the Memorial Day weekend! I had planned a note about all the lines that have changes, but without my email to refer to, it will be too much to make a definitive list. As always, I welcome corrections with citations for verification.
