Genealogy

I am interested in genealogy. I hope by sharing some of my family tree, others may benefit, and I may be able to get some new information. Part of my tree goes back to the late 1400's in England. Most of my ancestors have been traced back to the boat. Most are either from the British Isles or one branch from Germany. For more information on the Hamilton surname, see the site I administer for the Hamilton National Genealogical Society, Inc.

My Hamilton Surname NOTE: I am not a descendant of Alexander Hamilton. He only has about 350 living descendants, since only one of his children (John) had children who lived to adulthood. There is a Hamilton Surname DNA study that will tell you if your Hamiltons are related. If you are related to Alexander Hamilton, it is more likely as a cousin than a descendant.

Other Surnames to be posted:

Of my 310 known direct ancestors, they have the following known 113 surnames, including variants, of 284 individuals. ANDREWS; BAGHAM; BAKER; BARNES; BERRY; BIRD; BLAKELY; BOWLIN ; BOWLING; BRISTOW; BUCKMAN; BURGESS; BURNS; BUTTERWORTH; CAMPBELL; CARDWELL; CARSON; CLARK; CRAVEN; CROFT; DOWNING; EDDY; FOSTEN; FRANKLYN; FREEMAN; GAW/MCGAW (there is research that indicates my latest known Gaw changed his name from McGaw, so far the proof is thin); GIBSON; GOFF ; GOFFE; GOODHUE; GOODWIN; GRIMES; HAMILTON; HANCOCK; HANKLEY; HART; HATTON; HAWKINS; HESTON; HILL; HOLMES; HOPPER; HOYT; HUTCHINGS; HUTCHISON; INGERSOLL; JOHNSON; JONES; JUDD; KEANE; LASHLEY; LEE; LIDDLE; LORD; MACAFEE; MANSFIELD; MARTIN; MCCLURE; MCGAW (see Gaw Line); MCMULLEN; MCMULLIN; MCNEIL; MEAKINS; MEEK; MORGAN; MUNNE; MUSGROVE; NEWELL; NEWMAN; NORTH; NORTON; ODELL; OLMSTEAD; OWENS; PADDOCK; PALMER; PATTERSON (see McGaw line); PECK; PETERSON; PORTER; PRESTON; RAINES; RANDALL; ROBERTSON; ROE; ROGERS; RUSCOE; SAVORY; SEYMOUR; SLANY; SNIDER; SPARKS; SPEAK/SPEAKE/SPEAKS; STIVER; STORR; SWETT; TOMPKINS; TURNER; UMSTATT/UMSTATTD/UMSTEAD/UMSTOTT; VOWLES; WADE; WALKER; WALLER; WARNOCK; WEARE; WHEELER; WHITTEN; WILCOX; WILLIAMS; WILSON; WOOD; WOODFORD; WOODROKE; WOODRUFF

Family Stories: My great-grandfather Aaron Burns said that his father told him he was a third cousin to the poet Robert Burns. At best he was a 5th cousin, but so far proof is lacking.

Some of my wife's ancestors were in the same area of Maine when some of my ancestors were. One of her ancestor's children married a GIBSON, if that GIBSON ties into mine, then she and I might be shirttail relatives.

Of my wife's 168 known direct ancestors, they have the following known 77 surnames, including variants, of 161 individuals. ACYE; ADAMS; ADIEL; AINSLIE; AMORY; BALDWIN; BOURBON; CALHAM; DAVIDSON; DAVIS; DAY; DE MAINTENON; DENNIS; DETAR; DETART; DITTENGER; DODGE; DONALDSON; EVANS; FAUN; GRANDFIELD; GRAY; GREENE; HAENI; HAFNI; HAITON; HAWLEY; HAYES; HEUSS; HIATT; HUDSON; INGALLS; JACQUES; JOGHS; JOHNSON; KILBORN; LAUPER; LENIGAR; LEONARD; LEYSER; LISSER; LITTLETON; LOBSINGER; MCCLURE; MEADE; MILLER; ORR; OSGOOD; PERRETT; RADKE; REAVE; REED; RICHARDS; SANDERSON; SCHINDLER; SCHMID; SELBY; SKALES; SMITH; SPIES; SPIESS; SPOFFORD; STAEBLER/STABLER/STEBLER; STICKNEY; STOVER; STRAUCHEN; SULLY; SWAN; TATE; TRUMBLE; TURNER; WATSON; WATTERM; WATTERSON; WIEDKEN; WILHELM; ZINK

Family Stories: My wife's great-grandmother was a Stover and always said she was related to President Eisenhower, whose mother was a Stover. So far I cannot prove it. It would be cool if it were true, since my great-great-great grandfather Rev. William Cardwell helped found Lane University were Ike's parents met and married.

On of my wife's ancestors is supposed to have come on the Mayflower, another is supposed to have been involved in the Boston Tea Party. The individuals are real, but the research is not mine, and I have not yet verified the connection.
